Meet Riley!
A spirited, silly and determined little girl
|
As so many new parents can attest, the happiest, most fulfilling day they will ever come to know is the day on which their first child is born.
Thornton couple Tami and Justin Tuttle welcomed their first child to the world on February 9th, 2005. Immediately, they fell in love with the beautiful, blue-eyed, brown-haired girl whom they decided to name Riley.
The meaning of the name Riley is “courageous and brave”; traits that Justin and Tami felt their daughter would possess and would be so important as she faced the challenges of spina bifida.
The first challenge was the surgery to close her lower lumbar/upper sacral lesion just a few hours after she made her way into the world. Justin and Tami were so thankful for the support from their family and friends and for the amazing doctors and staff at the hospital.
From then on, Justin and Tami have enjoyed getting used to parenthood.
Riley was an easy-going, happy infant. Early intervention programs through the Colorado Department of Education’s Early Childhood Connections have proven to be significant to Riley’s excellent progress. A physical therapist has visited Riley weekly at home. In addition, from about 6 months of age, Riley has visited The Children’s Hospital’s Northwest Specialty Care Center twice weekly where she receives physical and occupational therapy services. Riley enjoys her visits to the gym so much that she now asks to “go play with Helene and Susan”.
Over the last two years, Riley has faced many challenges including VP shunt placement, extraction of congenital cataracts, shunt revision, Chiari II decompression, and most recently a syrinx-pleural shunt. She never fails to amaze all those around her with her resilience and cheerful disposition. Despite all of the medical intervention, Riley continues to grow and achieve success in reaching her goals.
Now, as an energetic, inquisitive 2 year old, Riley continues to enjoy swimming, reading, music and other fun activities like sledding, going to the park, riding in her 4-wheeler, playing with the neighbor kids, visiting the library, and other outings like camping, boating, and going to the zoo. She can crawl and is learning to use a walker and is excelling in her language development.
Recently, Justin and Tami and their families have come to realize the benefits of networking with others that share their experiences. They have taken advantage of recent CSBA sponsored educational seminars and Tami has enjoyed getting to know some of the other mothers through the CSBA luncheons and playgroups.
Also, in an effort to support CSBA, Tami and her sister Lindsey ran a ˝ marathon in January raising over $5,000 by soliciting donations from family and friends. Lindsey was amazed at the support they received stating, “People often want to help and just don’t know how. We were surprised at the generosity of those that have never even met Riley having only seen pictures and heard of her story.”
Justin and Tami, along with their extended families,
are excited to participate in the upcoming 5K Walk, Run, Roll on Mother’s Day at Washington Park.
They look forward to the continued love and happiness that Riley brings to their lives.
She is such a spirited, silly and determined little girl.
Each and every day brings new memories that they will cherish forever.
