NEWS
Spina Bifida is the most permanently disabling birth defect in the United States.
It is more common than cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy COMBINED!
It occurs when the spine of the baby fails to close during the first month of pregnancy. The effects of Spina Bifida are different for each person and there is no know cause.
There are 65 million women of child bearing age in the United States at risk of giving birth to a child with Spina Bifida, yet it is estimated that 70% of all Spina Bifida births could be avoided if women were to take a sufficient amount of folic acid before becoming pregnant.
